What is the Community Schools Initiative?
After nine months of planning and collaboration with community partners, the Sisters School District recently received a three year grant to begin a Community Schools Initiative. As described by the Coalition for Community Schools, “A community school is both a place and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources. Its integrated focus on academic, services, support and opportunities leads to improved student learning, stronger families and healthier communities.” The Community Schools believe that all learning does not only occur in the classroom during the school day. Thus, there is an equal focus on the following critical elements:
- Before and after school academic support and enrichment opportunities
- Meeting the physical and behavioral health needs of children and families
- Developing stronger parent/guardian and community involvement
- Building partnerships with local businesses and agencies
- The goals are improved student learning, stronger families and a healthier community. There is a lot more to what the Community Schools Initiative is going to bring to Sisters. As things develop, there will be more opportunities for adults and children alike to learn, grow and thrive. Feel free to contact the coordinator, Shawn Diez at 541-549-8981 or at 541-549-2091 if you have questions or would like to get involved in this exciting addition to the Sisters Community.
